Sri Lanka dismissed the Netherlands for the lowest score in Twenty20 international history as they cruised to the top of Group One in Chittagong.


The sorry Dutch were bundled out for 39 runs in 10.3 overs, 17 fewer runs than the previous worst total.


Only Tom Cooper made double figures as Angelo Mathews and Ajantha Mendis took three wickets apiece.


Sri Lanka knocked off the runs in five overs for the loss of only one wicket to complete a nine-wicket victory.

Missing plane lost, Malaysia says

Malaysia's prime minister has announced on the basis of new analysis it must be concluded that missing flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

Najib Razak said Malaysia Airlines had informed the families of the 239 passengers and crew.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went missing after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on 8 March.

The announcement came as the search effort in the southern Indian Ocean completed a fifth day of operations.

Teenage girl shot dead in London

A teenage girl thought to be aged about 15 has been shot dead in east London.

Police were called shortly before 16:00 GMT to an address in Eastway, Hackney.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three youths aged under 18 were arrested nearby and taken into custody at an east London police station.

Officers attended the scene, together with London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.

Buy Elvis Presley's 12-Pound 'Aloha From Hawaii' Cape

A 12-pound cape custom-made for Elvis Presley for the singer's famed 1973 performance Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite was up for auction.

The full-length cape, adorned with an American eagle and stars and inlaid with semi-precious stones, measured nearly five feet in length, but when Presley tried it on in rehearsals, he found it too heavy to be worn onstage for the show.

Designer Bill Belew was forced to create a lighter replacement for Presley, with the original sent back to Graceland.

De Villiers tipped to succeed Smith

AB de Villiers is the most likely candidate to succeed Graeme Smith as South Africa's Test captain, but if he is to assume the additional responsibility it might mean a change in team structure.

Vietnam probes 'missing jet debris'

Vietnamese navy planes have spotted what could be fragments from the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, that disappeared almost two days ago.

Officials said it was too dark to be certain the objects were from Flight MH370, which had 239 people on board.

A multinational team is searching for wreckage and ships will try to confirm the find, after dawn.

Investigators are also checking CCTV footage of two passengers who were travelling on stolen passports.

Sri Lanka German trade tops 852 mn US dollars.

Sri Lanka German trade has hit record heights last year with the total trade turnover exceeding 852 million US dollars.

Reports state that total trade turnover was in the excess of 771 million US dollars in 2012. Sri Lanka exported goods to Germany to the tune of 452 million US dollars, while German exports to Sri Lanka stood at 319 million US dollars.

For the first time trade balance too has narrowed from 133 million US dollars, to 83 million US dollars.

The shooting incident which took place in Walpola - Gampaha which resulted in the death of a 19 year old A/L student yesterday is believed to have been the result of an attempted theft.

Actor Richard Gere has tapped Chef Michael White to take over his Bedford Post Inn restaurant in New York.

The Pretty Woman star opened the place in 2007, but White will now handle all operations for the space and rename it Compania.

Gere will hold on to control of the rest of the eight-bedroom inn.

Video: 3 individuals buried under earthen berm in Gannoruwa - One dead

One of the workers who were hospitalized after being buried under a mound of earth while preparing earthen berms along the Gannoruwa – Peradeniya road had died.

The police stated that 3 individuals were buried in this manner and the other two individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.

The deceased was a 30 year old man hailing from the Poodaluoya region.

The development work on the road is being carried out by the Road Development Authority and the 3 workers who met with the accident were employed by a private contractor.

Afghanistan President Hameed Karzai who is here on a three day official visit to Sri Lanka had bilateral talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning.

The Afghan President was given all diplomatic marks of respect including a guard of honor when he arrived for talks at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

During the talks, President Karzai said that the best protector of all human rights is peace.

He pointed out that the path to human development and prosperity is peace and Sri Lanka has achieved such lasting peace.

President Karzai said that Sri Lanka has been rated for its top social and economical development to become one of the top nations in South Asia.

He said therefore his country wants to follow suit of a development agenda similar to that of Sri Lanka.

During the discussion, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he praises President Karzai’s administration which has been giving leadership to Afghanistan in its decisive era of circumstances.

President Rajapaksa also stated that Sri Lanka is ready to give its fullest support to Afghanistan in its daunting effort to achieve lasting peace.

Later the two countries signed four important agreements.

Meanwhile the Afghan President had also convened a media briefing in Colombo this evening to educate journalists about his tour of Sri Lanka.

Korea-Sri Lanka Travel & Tourism Club Launched.

The Korea-Sri Lanka Travel & Tourism Club was launched recently in Seoul. The club was created to enhance the cultural and economic relationship between Sri Lanka and South Korea. One of its main goals is to promote tourism, a core area of growth for Sri Lanka-Korea relations.

Hamid Karzai arrives in Sri lanka

The President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai arrived in Sri Lanka today, at the invitation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The visit which was scheduled to take place last month was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

Three Memoranda of Understanding between the two countries on cooperation in training of Afghan nurses in Sri Lanka, Education and Sports are due to be signed during the visit.

This will be the first-ever State visit to Sri Lanka by the President of Afghanistan.

Addressing the 25th Human Rights Sessions in Geneva today Professor G.L. Peries said that the Sri Lankan Government rejects the report submitted by UN Human Rights Commissioner Navaneedan Pillai on Sri Lanka.

Professor Peries said that the UN Commissioner’s report has contravened accepted UN norms.

During his 15 minute speech to the UN Human Rights session today, Professor Peries said that the Government has no necessity to change the demography of the North.

Having explained the development achievements of the country after ending the war, Professor Peries stressed the Constitutional right of every citizen to live in a place of his or her discretion.

He further said that Sri Lanka condemned the unnecessary interference by the UN Human Rights Commission in its domestic affairs.

Meanwhile a petition against Sri Lanka carrying the signatures of 38 internationally known human rights activists including Desmond Tutu of South Africa has been handed over the UN.

Petitioners have requested the UN to appoint an international commission to investigate human rights issues in Sri Lanka.

It has also stated that a resolution should be passed during the current Geneva sessions with regard to this proposed international commission on Sri Lanka.

The petitioners stated that such a resolution would push Sri Lanka towards achieving reconciliation.

Among the signatories to the petition are TNA Leader MP R. Sampandan, Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran and Bishop of Mannar Rayappu Joseph.

Meanwhile Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that any proposal requesting an international investigation on alleged human rights violation incidents in Sri Lanka is an interference of the country’s internal affairs.

Issuing a communiqué, the Archbishop stated that the LLRC was appointed to look into the grievances of the affected parties.

Meanwhile the Eastern Muslim Citizens Forum is preparing to hand over a letter to all Muslim diplomatic missions in Colombo requesting them to support Sri Lanka during the Geneva Human Rights sessions.

The 25th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced in Geneva today.

The inaugural statement was made by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon followed by UN Human Rights Council Commissioner Navaneedan Pillai.

Ban Ki-moon, during his statement, applauded the report presented by Navaneedan Pillai on the accountability and reconciliation process in Sri Lanka.

The UN Secretary General further said that Navaneedan Pillai acts fearlessly to protect the rights of the oppressed.

In her statement before the session, Pillai stated that making any accountability process successful on the basis of rule of law is still a distant dream.

She insisted that governments should stop all acts of vengeance against UN representatives and other individuals who work with the UN.

Airbus to increase production

Europe's largest aerospace group, Airbus, has recorded a rise in full-year profits and company sources said it will increase output of its A320 jets.

Net income rose 21% to 3.6 billion euros in 2013, a year when Airbus delivered a record 626 planes. Revenue rose 5% to 59.3 billion euros.

Airbus sources said they expected to deliver a similar number of planes this year.

It would increase production of its A320 jets to 46 planes a month from 42 by 2016.

Oscars: Gravity eyes prizes as countdown begins

A suspect in the Buddha Gaya attack arrested.

The National Investigation Agency has arrested a suspected Indian Mujahideen activist in connection with Bodh Gaya serial blasts from a village in Bihar’s Arwal district.

Acting on a tip off, the NIA team arrested the suspected Irfan from Auwgila village on Saturday.

Immediately after his arrest, the NIA team took Irfan to Patna in a vehicle under tight security for questioning in connection with the Bodh Gaya serial blasts.

The Indian Mujahideen had carried out serial blasts at the Mahabodhi temple and adjoining areas in Bodh Gaya in which two persons were injured on July 7th, 2013.

UNHRC conference begins today: President to Myanmar

The UNHRC’s 25th session begins in Geneva today.

It will be held till 28th this month.

While UN Secretary General Baan Ki Moon and UN Human Rights Commissioner Navaneethan Pillai will make its initial statements, the US, UK and Canada too are scheduled to express views today.

These three countries support the resolution submitted against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC session this time.

Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave for Myanmar today to participate at the BIMSTEC Summit where leaders of seven Asian States will meet.

President Rajapaksa will also meet with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Myanmar leaders on the sidelines of the sub-regional grouping.

The members of the BIMSTEC grouping which is the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, are Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris left the country day before yesterday for Myanmar ahead of President Rajapaksa’s arrival for the two-day official visit.

Professor G L Peiris will then travel to Geneva on the 4th to lead the Sri Lanka delegation at the UN Human Rights Council’s 25th regular sessions.

The Minister will address the UNHRC member States on March 5th and present Sri Lanka’s case.

Sri Lanka’s Special Envoy on Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe is also a part of the Sri Lankan delegation to Geneva.

Ed Joyce stars as Irish record famous win

Ed Joyce starred with the bat as Ireland earned a famous six-wicket win over West Indies in yesterday’s Twenty20 clash at Sabina Park, Jamaica.

West Indies scored 116-8 off their 20 overs, Chris Gayle top-scoring with 18, and Alex Cusack, Kevin O'Brien and Tim Murtagh taking two wickets apiece.

George Clooney Attends White House Screening

George Clooney, Matt Damon and Bill Murray have attended a screening of The Monuments Men hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House.

The film, directed by Clooney, is based on the true story of US soldiers in World War Two who rescued artworks stolen by Nazi thieves.

Sara Bloomfield, director the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, also attended the screening.

Three policemen interdicted after Minuwangoda mother's death

Three policemen attached to the Minuwangoda police station were interdicted after the mother of a suspect died suddenly as police attempted to arrest the suspect.

Police went to a house at Poragoda in Minuwangoda on Tuesday night to arrest a suspect in connection with an assault.

Police had entered the house through its back door as family members did not respond to the police call to open the front door.

When the suspect’s mother learned that police came to arrest her son, she suddenly fell ill on the spot.

Later police took her to hospital in the police jeep but she was pronounced dead after hospitalizing. 

Later an inquiry was held on the instruction of a Gampaha Division SP to ascertain whether the officers who visited the suspect’s home had over acted beyond their duty.

On the outcome of the inquiry, one police sergeant and two constables were interdicted today.

The trial of the case against former Chief Justice is fixed for May 12th

The trial of the case against former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake for not declaring her bank assets was fixed for the 12th of May this year.

Colombo Chief  Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya told the Court today that the trial will be begun after charges are read out of the case filed by the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption.

Our Court correspondent said that International law counselors and legal officers attached to foreign embassies were present at the Court today to observe the trial.

Former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake accompanied by a team of lawyers led by President Counselor Naleen Ladduwahetti appeared in Court today.

President Counselor Ladduwahetti said that the case had been fixed for trial on the 14th of last November and he raised objections for putting off the case for today on the request by the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption.

Appearing for the Attorney General State Counselor  Dilan Rathnayake said that the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption requested to postpone the case due to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

President Counselor Naleen Ladduwahetti said that although the Court ordered to hand over the documents with regard to the bank accounts, it was unable to obtain them as the case was postponed.

Later State Counselor proposed the respondent party to backdate the receipt of the bank documents to the 14th of November.

At that point,  President Counselor Ladduwahetti raised objections to the State Counselor’s proposal but agreed to record as that the documents are received today.

Accordingly the respondent party received a bank account document of 35 pages.

The Judge also said in open court that the respondent party was not affected whatsoever due to the postponement of the case.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka also appeared for the former Chief Justice, and its President Attorney-at-law Upul Jayasuriya also present in Court today.

Sri Lanka beats Bangladesh by 61 runs in 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh in their 2nd ODI today, by 61 runs Played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, in Mirpur.

Kumar Sangakkara corrected the flaws in Sri Lanka's batting by scoring his 17th ODI hundred, leading a recovery at first before completely dominating the Bangladesh bowling.

Sri Lanka scored 289 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 50 overs while Bangladesh was all out for only 228 runs.

Sri Lanka's 289 was a 57-run improvement over their previous best, while batting first in Mirpur.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bat to push for a series win in the second ODI in Mirpur.

Mathews added an extra spinner in the 11, by picking Ajantha Mendis to replace the injured Nuwan Kulasekara.

The seamer was ruled out of the series with a groin injury he picked up in the first ODI, which Sri Lanka won by 13 runs.

MS Dhoni needs to take risks to win abroad, says Rahul Dravid

Former Indian Captain Rahul Dravid has backed the under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni to stay on as Test skipper for at least a year, but added that he would need to take a "few risks" to win abroad.

Dravid said that Dhoni's captaincy has been defensive in critical situations and felt he doesn't trust his bowling attack enough.

Away from home, Dhoni has captained India in 23 Tests, of which they have won five, lost 11 and drawn seven, and asked if the selectors should continue with him, Dravid replied in positive.

Facebook to buy messaging app WhatsApp for $19bn

Facebook has entered into an agreement to acquire WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, for $19 billion in cash and stock, according to a filing Wednesday.

The deal is by far Facebook's largest acquisition to date and comes after rumors in late 2012 and early 2013 that Facebook and Google were vying to buy the messaging service.

According to the filing, Facebook has agreed to pay $12 billion in stock and $4 billion in cash for the company. Facebook has also agreed to pay an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to WhatsApp's founders and employees as part of the deal, which would bring the total deal price to about $19 billion.

WhatsApp, founded in 2009 by former Yahoo engineers Jan Koum and Brian Acton, is the most popular of a set of mobile messaging apps that some argued posed a threat to Facebook's business. The app served as an alternative to SMS by letting users send messages for free across smartphone platforms. It currently has more than 450 million people who use the app every day.

"WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's cofounder and CEO, said in a statement. "I've known Jan for a long time and I'm excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected."

On an investor call that followed the announcement, Zuckerberg added: "The growth rate they have today and the monetization that's early but promising and in place, we see a clear trajectory ahead and are excited to work together on this."

Unlike Facebook, WhatsApp does not make money through ads. Instead, WhatsApp is free to use for the first year and then charges $0.99 a year for a subscription after that. The founders have been firm on not wanting to introduce advertising, a point that was re-iterated by Zuckerberg and Koum on the call.

"We think that for our product, advertising is not necessarily the right way to go," Koum said. "We think we have a very solid monetization system in place."

If the deal doesn't go through, Facebook will pay a breakup fee of $1 billion to WhatsApp, which is still more than the total amount Facebook ended up paying to acquire Instagram.

Facebook stock declined by more than 4.5% in after hours trading following the announcement.

US government warns airlines of new shoe - bomb threat

The US government has advised airlines to beware of any attempts to smuggle explosives onboard in footwear.

Homeland security officials did not indicate any known specific threat or plots, but said the warning focused on US-bound flights from abroad.

It is the second time in recent weeks that the US has warned of an increased threat of explosives on airliners.

The latest advisory comes just weeks after the US told airlines to be on the lookout for explosives hidden in toothpaste tubes on direct flights to Russia.

Iran nuclear deal framework 'agreed' in Vienna

Iran is reported to have agreed a framework for talks with six world powers in Vienna on a comprehensive agreement to limit its controversial nuclear programme.

A top Iranian representative was quoted as saying that agreement was reached after two days of talks.

But correspondents say the two sides remain far apart on a final resolution.

Iran is accused by Western countries of trying to develop nuclear weapons, something it denies.

Holding that assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was an attack on India’s soul, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the release of his killers would be “contrary to all principles of justice” and the Tamil Nadu government has been told not to proceed with it as it is “not legally tenable”.

In a statement in New Delhi, he said that no government or party should be soft in the fight against terrorism, an apparent reference to the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu which has decided to release all the seven convicts in the assassination case after the Supreme Court commuted death sentence of three of them to life imprisonment.

He said the Centre has “informed the Tamil Nadu government that their proposed course of action to release the killers of Rajiv Gandhi is not legally tenable and should not be proceeded with.”

The Supreme Court has put on hold Tamil Nadu's plan to release seven people convicted of killing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, which has led to a legal battle between the state government and the Centre.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said Tamil Nadu's decision was legally untenable, contrary to all principles of justice and "should not be proceeded with."

On Wednesday, a day after the top court spared three of the convicts, Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan from execution, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced that all seven convicts in the case would be freed and gave the Centre three days to respond to her decision, after which, she said, she would go ahead.

The Indian Central Government filed a petition at its Supreme Court today against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jayeram’s decision to release Rajiv Gandhi killers.

New Delhi reports stated that the Supreme Court has agreed to examine the petition filed by the Center.

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa triggered outrage in the Congress and elsewhere by announcing her government's decision to release all seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

It immediately sparked a heated political row with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asking, "If a Prime Minister's killers can be released, what kind of justice should the common man expect?"

Legal experts, however, questioned the validity of her claim as the state advisory board alone had the powers to process remission pleas of lifers.

The top legal minds of the central government were in a huddle to work out the strategy to prevent the killers from walking free.

The BJP also expressed its dismay over Jayalalithaa's decision.
